The Fundación Cardio Infantil is one of Colombia's leading medical facilities and a pioneer in cardiac care. Established in 1973 in Bogotá as a private, non-profit foundation for the prevention and treatment of cardiac illness in low-income children, Fundación Cardio Infantil today is a 300-bed integral-service hospital, with 250 physicians and a staff of 1,200 employees that provide care for over 1 million patients per year.

By expanding the age range and profile of patients it serves, Fundación Cardio Infantil now provides top-quality care throughout the lifecycle -to those patients first admitted as children as well as to those seeking care for the first time as adults- and is able to cover the financial shortfall resulting from its services to the lower-income segments of the population.

Although the Fundación Cardio Infantil today also provides general medicine services, health promotion and prevention programs, dental care, as well as diagnostic imaging and laboratory procedures, its main focus continues to be cardiac-related illnesses. It performs more than 1,200 open-heart surgeries per year (out of a total of 3,500 procedures), 42 percent of them on children.

The foundation is involved in a number of projects sponsored by the Ministry of Health of Colombia to improve the quality of health care in Colombia. It is the teaching hospital for Universidad del Rosario and organizes symposia with the Cleveland Clinic, New-York Presbyterian Medical Center, Stanford University, and the Children's Hospital of Boston.

From its inception, Fundación Cardio Infantil has been funded through private donations from individuals and corporations. It enjoys an unprecedented level of popular support, as evidenced by the donations sent from around the country by people from all socio-economic levels.

Currently, the foundation along with its partner institution Fundación Neumológica Colombiana (Pneumology Foundation) is engaged in a $15 million dollar expansion project that will result in the addition of 200,000 square feet with state-of-the art diagnostic infrastructure, operating facilities, and technology.
