On the Lower East Side of Manhattan, La Salle Academy is a college preparatory school that serves primarily low-income boys from the surrounding neighborhood. Its mission is to educate young men of diverse cultural, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds, with an emphasis on high-quality programs, a nurturing environment, and a disciplined approach.

Founded in 1848, La Salle Academy educates 560 boys, 54% of whom are Hispanic, and 90% considered “at risk.” The Genesis Foundation provides on-going support for the LaSallian Sponsorship Program, through which more than two thirds of the students at La Salle receive some form of financial assistance. The school is committed to its statement that “once a young man has entered La Salle he will not have to leave for solely financial reasons.”

Most importantly, the Academy can boast a great graduating record. Over 99% of its graduating students go on to college, in a district where less than 50% of high school students finish the 12th grade. La Salle has been able to achieve this by providing highly personalized education, where teachers know the students well and can address issues from home or in the classroom quickly and appropriately. It also provides state-of-the art facilities and programs both in arts and technology.
