The Golda Meir School was founded in 1978 by the Federation of Hebrew Ladies of Barranquilla, an affiliate of the International Council of Jewish Women.

The school provides non-denominational education from elementary through high-school to 400 students of the lowest socio-economic status in the city. Surrounded by the dirt roads and open sewers of the community Las Américas, the students, in their impeccable uniforms, learn more than the basic subjects; they are taught English and computers, required to be disciplined and observe good manners, and most important of all, they are encouraged to know that they can get ahead.

While most students' parents hold menial jobs - if any at all, given the country's high unemployment rate - the students here focus on attending college or entering into a qualified profession. More than half succeed and realize their goals.
