Some of the poorest children of Bogotá find a safe, warm and stimulating environment at Proyecto de Vida, a foundation that seeks to give children from low socio-economic backgrounds the tools to develop into promising adults.
Proyecto de Vida carries out its programs in Usaquén, Ciudad Bolívar, and Soacha, areas of Bogotá of extreme poverty, shaken by violence and the thousands of displaced people running away from the war of the countryside. In its humble rooms, Proyecto de Vida offers children a place to go when they are not in school, where they can seek refuge from the overcrowding of their homes, escape the family violence of which they are often victims, and where they can learn and grow.
Proyecto de Vida’s interdisciplinary team focuses on a methodology based on affection, art, and structured play that gives the children an opportunity to develop social, cognitive, emotional, and physical skills and that promotes self-esteem, security, self-awareness as well as self-discipline and self-control. This, in addition to assistance from a psychologist and a speech therapist, if necessary, as well as tutoring and academic leveling, allow children to perform better in school and be able to truly have an opportunity to construct their life project; their “proyecto de vida.”
A recurring grant by the Genesis Foundation has supported Proyecto de Vida in its mission to improve the lives of Bogota’s children.
